Memorial Day
Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service of the United States of America. Many cities and towns claim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day.  Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966. It is really not that important where it started but why. It was borne out of the civil war and a desire to honor our dead. Officially proclaimed 5 May 1868. General John Logan, National Commander of the Grand Army of the republic in General Order no 11 declared “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,” he proclaimed. The date of Decoration Day, as he called it, was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle. Please take the time to remember those who have lost their lives in defense of this great country.

Mar 23 program..Art Frey talks about the Lions and the food pantry
Art Frey gave us some info on the food pantry and also what the Lions major projects were. The food pantry is housed at the Moravian Church and thanks to many donations ia able to feed a large number of families. One item which they need are cans od fruit so we have decided to make Charter night a night of donating cans of fruit...bring a can of fruit to Overboards on Mon Mar 30. Art also spoke about the Lions emphasis on blindness and eye conditions.(If you have old glasses lying around the house, donate them to Lions) They support Beacon Lodge which is a five hundred and eighty-three acre summer camp for children and adults with special needs including blindness, deafness, and many other physical and mental challenges. A project which parallels Rotary's well water and other water projects is Lions Clean River Water project...cleaning up river waters to prevent blindness. We were delighted to have so many Lions join our meeting that night and hope that in the future, we can work together on a community project.
